How a notebook of poems and pink leopard trousers launched a pop icon
In short: Clad in pink leopard-print trousers and holding a notebook of poetry, Simon Le Bon attended an audition in May 1980. He wasn't just looking for a job; he was about to become the voice of the New Romantic movement and one of the most recognizable figures in synth-pop history.
Le Bon's ascent to stardom was far from linear. Before finding fame with Duran Duran, he spent time working on an Israeli kibbitz in the Negev desert in 1978. Following his move back to England for drama studies at the University of Birmingham, he met the group through his girlfriend at the time, bartender Fiona Kemp. His audition was defined by his songwriting potential; he successfully matched one of his own poems, "Sound of Thunder," to one of the band's existing instrumentals.
The band's early success was rapid. After a summer of playing around Birmingham, London, and Nottingham, they secured an EMI Records contract in December 1980. By 1981, they released their self-titled debut album, sparking a wave of success that included iconic releases like "Rio" in 1982 and "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" in 1983. This era saw Le Bon become a central figure in the New Romantic movement, characterized by a sound blending pop, disco, funk, and electronics.
Beyond the stage, Le Bon's life has been marked by both high-stakes adventure and significant personal challenges. In 1985, his yacht, Drum, capsized during the Fastnet Race off the coast of Cornwall, leaving him and his crew trapped in the hull for forty minutes before a Royal Navy rescue. Despite this, he went on to finish third overall in the 1985–1986 Whitbread Round the World Race. In 2024, his contributions to music and charity were recognized when he received an MBE from King Charles III.
