In short: Founded in 1994, Silversea Cruises transformed the industry by bundling gratuities, beverages, and shore excursions into a single fare. Originally a joint venture between European shipping interests, the line eventually expanded into remote expedition travel before becoming a key subsidiary of the global Royal Caribbean Group.

The origins of Silversea trace back to 1994, when a partnership between the Vlasov Group of Monaco and the Italian entrepreneur Antonio Lefebvre d'Ovidio established the brand. Drawing on their previous experience as co-owners of Sitmar Cruises, the founders sought to differentiate their new venture through a comprehensive all-inclusive pricing strategy. This approach, which covered expenses like travel insurance and port charges, was designed to appeal to a North American market that was expected to provide roughly 80 percent of the company's initial customer base.

The fleet began with the Silver Cloud in 1994, followed by the Silver Wind in 1995. As the company matured, it sought to innovate beyond traditional luxury cruising. In 2007, under the guidance of expedition expert Conrad Combrink, Silversea launched a dedicated expedition division. This move was a pioneering effort in the cruise industry, aiming to provide high-end travel experiences in remote regions. The acquisition of the former World Discoverer, renamed Silver Explorer, marked the beginning of this specialized fleet, which later expanded to include operations in the Galápagos Islands following the 2012 purchase of the Ecuadorian firm Canodros S.A.

Ownership of the line shifted significantly in the 21st century. By 2018, Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio had become the sole owner of the company, subsequently selling a majority stake to the Royal Caribbean Group for approximately $1 billion. By July 2020, Royal Caribbean had acquired the remaining shares, integrating the brand into its broader portfolio. Under this new management, the company has continued to expand its fleet with the Evolution-class vessels, including the Silver Nova and Silver Ray, which feature an innovative asymmetrical design. As of 2024, the line continues to evolve, marking its 30th anniversary with ongoing leadership transitions and fleet modernization.
