The surreal comedy of a nonprofit dedicated to making people smile
In short: In the world of Smiling Friends, a simple charity goal leads to profound chaos. What starts as a hotline for the unhappy quickly spirals into bizarre encounters with demons, historical anomalies, and reality-bending animation styles. It is a study in optimistic persistence meeting an increasingly surreal universe.
Created by Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack, Smiling Friends premiered on Adult Swim in 2022 after a pilot debut on April Fools' Day in 2020. The series centers on Smiling Friends Inc., a Philadelphia-based nonprofit where employees Pim Pimling and Charlie Dompler attempt to help troubled clients. While Pim is overtly cheerful and eager to assist, Charlie provides a cynical, pragmatic balance. Together with coworkers Allan Red and Glep, they navigate surreal situations that often transcend the scope of their actual jobs.
The show's aesthetic is intentionally eclectic, blending traditional animation, rotoscoping, stop motion, Flash, and live-action. This stylistic variety mirrors the unpredictable nature of its characters, such as Mr. Frog—a frog-like demon who rose from a show star to US President and world emperor before finding inner peace—and Glep, a character whose history allegedly includes causing the collapse of the Roman Empire in 329.
Despite its success and renewals through several seasons, Hadel and Cusack announced a conclusion for the series in February 2026. They cited burnout and a belief that the show had reached its natural narrative course as reasons for stopping, fearing a drop in quality if they continued. The creators originally conceived the idea in 2017 during a dinner in Burbank, aiming to create a 'springboard' for stories about lovable characters rather than just a workplace comedy.
The production structure evolved significantly over time; while Hadel and Cusack served as series directors, different individuals took on episode director roles starting with the second season. This shift allowed for diverse creative input while maintaining the core vision of the creators, who were both established figures in the Newgrounds and YouTube content creation scenes.
