In short: Smithfield Foods is the world's largest pork producer, an American industrial powerhouse with roots in Virginia. Simultaneously, the historic Smithfield Market in London is undergoing a major transformation. While they share a name, one represents the scale of modern industrial agriculture, while the other is a centuries-old urban institution.

Smithfield Foods, established in 1936 in Virginia, grew from a small family operation into a massive, vertically integrated pork producer. Founded by Joseph W. Luter Sr. and his son, the company eventually pioneered highly industrialized pig farming. By utilizing concentrated animal feeding operations, the firm gained control over the entire development cycle of its livestock, from conception to final processing. This expansion was fueled by an aggressive series of acquisitions, including the purchase of nearly 40 companies between 1981 and 2008, such as Gwaltney of Smithfield and Murphy Family Farms.

The company's scale reached global proportions, notably with its 2013 acquisition by the WH Group for $4.72 billion, marking the largest Chinese purchase of an American firm at that time. By 2016, the company employed over 50,000 people and generated $14 billion in annual revenue. Its massive processing facility in Tar Heel, North Carolina, became a symbol of this industrial reach, capable of processing 32,000 pigs daily. In 2025, the company expanded its financial structure by making roughly 12 percent of its stock publicly available on the Nasdaq.

In contrast, London’s Smithfield Market is a historic site currently transitioning into a new chapter. While the American food giant operates across international borders, the London market is preparing to move from its traditional Square Mile location to a new site at the Royal Docks. This redevelopment aims to repurpose the historic Grade II* listed buildings into a cultural and commercial hub. Unlike the industrial expansion of the pork producer, the London project focuses on urban revitalization, aiming to create 600 direct jobs and attract over one million annual visitors to a re-imagined cultural destination.
