In short: Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is defined by more than its namesake cascades. Once a frontier town shaped by the Dakota Boom and a brief stint as a divorce destination, it transformed into a financial powerhouse after 1981, when Citibank relocated its credit card operations to leverage favorable state usury laws.

Chartered in 1856, Sioux Falls was built on the banks of the Big Sioux River, a site chosen for its natural beauty and waterpower. Early settlers faced significant challenges, including the evacuation of the town during the 1862 Dakota War and a severe grasshopper plague in the 1890s. Despite these setbacks, the city experienced a massive population surge during the 1880s, growing from 2,164 to 10,167 residents in just nine years. By the turn of the century, it had gained a unique reputation as the Divorce Colony, attracting women from across the nation due to its permissive legal requirements.

The 20th century saw the city pivot toward industrial growth, anchored by the John Morrell meatpacking plant established in 1909. However, the most significant economic shift occurred in 1981. Following changes to state usury laws, Citibank moved its primary credit card center to the city. While some analysts credit this move for the city's subsequent population and job growth, others argue it was merely one part of a broader transition toward a service-based economy centered on finance, healthcare, and retail trade.

Today, Sioux Falls is the most populous city in South Dakota, with an estimated 209,289 residents as of 2024. The city has also undergone a cultural renaissance since the early 2000s, marked by the development of the Washington Pavilion and a thriving arts scene. Despite its modern growth, the city remains deeply connected to its origins, with the Big Sioux River falls—created 14,000 years ago—continuing to serve as the heart of the community's identity and history.
