In short: Born into one of music's most recognizable families, Sofia Richie had every opportunity to follow her father's path. Instead, she pivoted from vocal lessons and studio sessions to become a global fashion powerhouse, navigating the high-pressure transition from celebrity daughter to independent brand architect.

Sofia Alexandra Richie Grainge was born in Los Angeles on August 24, 1998, as the daughter of singer Lionel Richie. Growing up with an affinity for music, she began learning to sing at age five and played the piano by age seven. Her early life was deeply embedded in the industry; she made appearances at her father's shows and even worked in a studio with Good Charlotte vocalist Joel Madden. She also received formal vocal training from coach Tim Carter starting at age 14.

Despite these foundations, Richie consciously chose to move away from a music career. The primary driver was the intense pressure of living up to her father’s established stature in the music industry. This pivot led her toward modeling, which began at age 14 with a feature in Teen Vogue. By age 15, she secured her first fashion contract with Mary Grace Swim and eventually signed with Select Model Management in London.

Richie's transition into a commercial powerhouse involved high-profile runway debuts, including the American Heart Association's Red Dress Collection in February 2016. She has since walked for major houses like Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana while launching multiple independent collections. These include a 60-piece line with UK retailer Missguided in September 2019—priced between $20 and $100—and collaborations with House of Harlow 1960 and Bar III, where she successfully navigated the complexities of brand expansion and retail pricing.

Today, her career is defined by a mix of high-fashion editorials for magazines like Vogue Japan and Tatler, alongside strategic beauty and wellness endorsements. Her personal life has also remained in the spotlight, notably through her marriage to Elliot Grainge, the son of Universal Music Group's CEO, in April 2023.
