In short: Born into the ancient House of Lannoy, Stéphanie de Lannoy transitioned from a student of German philology to the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. Her journey involved moving between Brussels, Berlin, and Moscow, eventually leading to a profound decision to trade her Belgian roots for a new national identity.

Stéphanie Marie Claudine Christine de Lannobby was born on 18 February 1984 in Ronse, Belgium, the youngest of eight children born to Count Philippe de Lannoy and Alix della Faille de Leverghem. Her lineage, the House of Lannoy, traces its origins back to the 13th-century nobility of Hainaut. One branch of her family even immigrated to the United States, adopting the name Delano and becoming ancestors of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Her academic path was remarkably international. After attending school in Belgium and France, she studied Russian language and literature in Moscow for one year. She later earned a degree in German philology from the University of Louvain and a master's degree from Humboldt University of Berlin. Her professional experience included an internship at the Walloon Export and Foreign Investment Agency and working for an investment fund in Brussels.

In 2012, she married Grand Duke Guillaume V in a two-part ceremony, including a religious service at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg. Upon her husband's accession on 3 October 2025, she became Grand Duchess. This transition prompted a significant personal choice: she renounced her Belgian citizenship to become a naturalized Luxembourg citizen, stating that maintaining dual nationality would be inconsistent with her official role.

Today, her duties involve representing the Grand Ducal family through various patronages. She chairs the board of the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art and supports numerous organizations, ranging from biomedical research laboratories like Scienteens Lab to associations supporting artisans and stroke survivors. Her official life is deeply embedded in the cultural and social fabric of Luxembourg.
