A remote, icy archipelago in the South Atlantic remains a point of intense geopolitical friction.
In short: South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a rugged, largely uninhabited British Overseas Territory. Once a hub for industrial whaling, these islands now serve as a site for scientific research and a lingering sovereignty dispute, marked by a history of military occupation and the echoes of Antarctic exploration.
Located in the southern Atlantic, this territory consists of the mountainous South Georgia island and the volcanic South Sandwich chain. The islands are characterized by a harsh polar climate, with glaciers and permanent ice covering higher elevations. Despite their isolation, they have attracted explorers and scientists since the 17th century, when Anthony de la Roché first sighted South Georgia in 1675. James Cook later claimed the territory for Britain in 1775, naming it after King George III.
The 20th century transformed South Georgia into a center for global whaling, with Norwegian entrepreneur Carl Anton Larsen establishing the first permanent settlement at Grytviken in 1904. This era was notoriously brutal; visitors described the stations as dangerous, foul-smelling environments where decaying whales posed bizarre physical risks. Following the decline of the industry in the mid-1960s, these stations were largely abandoned, leaving behind only skeletal remains and a few preserved structures like the South Georgia Museum.
Sovereignty remains a contentious issue. Argentina has long asserted claims over the territory, leading to significant friction, including the 1982 conflict where Argentine forces seized control of the islands before being ousted by the British military. Today, the territory is administered separately from the Falkland Islands. While the South Sandwich Islands remain uninhabited, South Georgia hosts a small, non-permanent population primarily focused on research at King Edward Point, managed by the British Antarctic Survey.
