In short: South Tarawa is a fragile, continuous urban settlement stretching across a thin atoll. Home to over half of Kiribati's population, this economic hub faces extreme challenges, including severe water shortages, rising sea levels, and population density that rivals major global cities like London, all on land barely above sea level.

South Tarawa is a unique geographical and administrative entity, composed of a string of islets joined by causeways along the southern edge of the Tarawa Lagoon. The entire area is exceptionally narrow, averaging only 450 metres in width, with most land sitting less than 3 metres above sea level. This low elevation makes the capital highly vulnerable to natural disasters, flooding, and soil salination, which threaten the limited freshwater lenses that serve as the primary water source for its residents.

The population of South Tarawa has surged since the nation's independence in 1979, growing from 17,921 in 1978 to 63,439 by 2020. This rapid urbanization has created immense pressure on infrastructure. Because much of the land is unsuitable for development or reserved for essential services like water and runways, the effective population density is roughly 4,905 people per square kilometre. This density is comparable to London and significantly higher than cities like Sydney or Auckland, leading to widespread overcrowding and housing shortages.

Economic life in the capital is characterized by a heavy reliance on government employment and overseas remittances, as imports far exceed exports. Unemployment remains a critical issue, with only 34% of urban adults engaged in cash work as of 2010. To mitigate these pressures, the government has sought to decentralize services and encourage resettlement to outer islands. Meanwhile, the city continues to grapple with the dual threats of human-driven environmental degradation and the long-term, accelerating risks posed by climate-related sea-level rise.
