In short: Spanning seven decades and nearly 400 films, Sowcar Janaki was a cornerstone of South Indian cinema. From her debut alongside N. T. Rama Rao to playing the mother of Dr. Rajkumar, her career mirrored the evolution of Indian film, crossing linguistic borders and generational roles.

Born in 1931 in Rajahmundry, Sankaramanchi Janaki—professionally known as Sowlar Janaki—began her journey as an A-grade artist for All India Radio's Madras station. Although filmmaker B. N. Reddy offered her a film role at age 15, her family initially declined, believing acting was unsuitable for women. She eventually made her screen debut at 18 in the 1950 Telugu social drama Shavukaru, a film that also launched the career of N. T. Rama Rao.

Janaki's career was defined by remarkable versatility and linguistic range, spanning Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi films. She was a pioneer of pan-Indian cinema, appearing in the first Kannada pan-Indian film, Mahishasura Mardini, in 1959. Her on-screen relationship with Dr. Rajkumar was particularly unique; she transitioned from playing his leading lady in films like Gowri (1963) to playing his sister in Kanyarathna (1963), and eventually his mother in Thayige Thakka Maga (1978).

Her technical and professional milestones include starring in Raja Malaya Simha, the first Eastman Color movie in Telugu cinema, and appearing in the debut projects of icons like Waheeda Rehman and Sridevi. Beyond the screen, she was a prolific theatre artist, performing in over 3,000 stage plays. Her extensive accolades include two Nandi Awards, the Padma Shri in 2022, and a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. On 21 August 2026, Janaki died in Chennai at 94 years old.
