The Dutch acronym that turned into a global retail powerhouse
In short: What began in 1932 as a clever Dutch acronym for cooperative profit has grown into a massive multinational network. From small convenience shops to large supermarkets, the SPAR brand uses a unique partnership model to operate across 48 countries, spanning from Europe to Oceania.
Founded in Zegwaart, Netherlands, by Adriaan van Well, the company was originally known as DESPAR. The name was an acronym for the Dutch phrase 'Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig', which translates to 'Through united co-operation everyone profits regularly.' This name was chosen to evoke the Dutch verb 'sparen', meaning to save money. The original name was selected to resonate with the Dutch word for spruce tree, which inspired the company's logo.
The brand's identity has evolved significantly since its inception. While the logo and name were most recently revised in 1968 by designer Raymond Loewy, the company maintains a complex global presence. In some regions, the name remains DESPAR, such as in Italy and Hungary, while in others, it has been abbreviated to simply SPAR as the organization expanded across Europe. In certain markets like China, the brand is recognized by the name Siba supermarket. Additionally, the brand's visual identity in Saudi Arabia features Arabic script alongside Latin letters.
The SPAR business model is highly flexible, utilizing different structures depending on the country. A shop might be independently owned, part of a franchise, or part of a larger chain. This versatility allows for diverse sub-brands: EuroSPAR often serves as a mid-sized supermarket niche, while INTERSPAR and SUPERSPAR cater to different market segments in countries like Austria and Australia. The company's diverse sub-brands also include KwikSPAR, a convenience format found in Southern Africa, and the SPAR Gourmet range in Austria.
The scale of the operation is immense. By 2024, the group operated 13,900 stores across 48 countries. In the 2022 fiscal year, the company reported global sales of €43.5 billion, marking a 5.6 percent increase over the previous year. The group's international footprint continues to expand, with recent entries into the retail markets of Latvia and Kazakhstan.
