In short: Launched in 1951, the Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria was a symbol of national recovery and maritime prestige. Yet, during a 1956 voyage, a collision with the Stockholm revealed catastrophic stability issues. Despite the ship's advanced radar and watertight compartments, a severe list rendered half her lifeboats useless within minutes.

The Andrea Doria was a 29,100-ton vessel designed to restore Italian pride after the destruction of its merchant fleet during World War II. Launched in 1951, she featured luxury amenities and was equipped with early-warning radar and a double hull divided into 11 watertight compartments. Her designers believed she could remain afloat even if two adjacent compartments were breached. However, the ship suffered from a critical stability flaw: her watertight bulkheads only extended to A Deck, and she was prone to listing when hit by significant force.

On July 25, 1956, while approaching Nantucket in thick fog, the Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish liner Stockholm. The Stockholm’s reinforced bow pierced the Italian ship’s starboard side, tearing open five fuel tanks. Because the port-side fuel tanks had been emptied during the journey, the ship developed a severe list exceeding 20 degrees almost immediately. This tilt caused seawater to spill over the tops of the bulkheads into adjacent compartments and rendered the port-side lifeboats impossible to launch, as they could not be lowered past a 15-degree list.

The disaster resulted in 46 deaths, but a massive rescue operation involving the Île de France, Cape Ann, and USNS Private William H. Thomas saved 1,660 passengers and crew. The Andrea Doria capsized and sank the following morning. While the collision sparked intense legal battles, the shipping companies reached a confidential out-of-court settlement, leaving the official cause of the accident formally unpublished. The incident remains the worst maritime disaster in United States waters since the 1915 Eastland capsizing.
