In short: The State Grid Corporation of China manages almost the entire Chinese energy transmission network. Beyond its massive domestic footprint, this state-controlled behemoth has expanded its influence across continents, investing in power infrastructure from Brazil to Australia. It is currently one of the largest companies on the planet by revenue.

Established in December 2002 following a major restructuring of the former State Power Corporation of China, the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) emerged as a central pillar of the nation's energy sector. It operates under the guidance of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, a body of the State Council. The company controls roughly 80% of China's electrical grid, with the remainder managed by the China Southern Power Grid Company.

The corporation is defined by its massive scale and technical ambition. By 2023, it employed 1.3 million people and served 1.1 billion customers, generating revenue of US$546 billion. A key driver of its growth has been the development of ultra-high voltage (UHV) power lines, a technology championed by former chairman Liu Zhenya. This strategy, known as 'one special, four large,' prioritized UHV grids alongside investments in coal, nuclear, hydro, and renewable energy sources.

SGCC's reach extends far beyond China's borders. Through its international development arm, the company has acquired stakes in energy utilities across Europe, Latin America, and Oceania. This includes significant holdings in Portuguese, Italian, and Greek grid operators, as well as major infrastructure projects in Brazil and Chile. The company has also proposed a Global Energy Interconnection project, aiming to link smart grids and transmission networks across more than 80 countries, reflecting its ambition to become a central node in the world's energy future.
