From Johannesburg's suburbs to the heights of European football
In short: He was a prodigy from Westbury who conquered the Eredivisie and the Premier League. While his career was marked by brilliant goals and trophy wins, it was also defined by persistent injuries and a complex journey through the world's most famous clubs.
Born in Johannesburg in 1982, Steven Pienaar’s ascent began at the School of Excellence. His talent led him to the Ajax Cape Town academy, where he played under Dutch coach Leo van Veen. This early mentorship helped refine his technique and mentality, preparing him for a professional career that would span South Africa, the Netherlands, Germany, and England.
Pienaar’s time in the Netherlands was a period of significant achievement. After moving to the Netherlands in January 2001, he became a vital component of the Ajax squad that secured Dutch League titles in 2002 and 2004. During this era, he shared the pitch with legendary figures such as Zlatan Ibrahimović and Wesley Sneijder. His individual brilliance was recognized when he won the Marco van Basten Award for Ajax Talent of the Year in the 2002–03 season.
His transition to the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund in 2006 was more difficult; despite inheriting the number 10 shirt, he struggled to find acceptance within the squad. However, his subsequent spells at Everton saw him reach new heights. After earning the 2009–10 Everton Player of the Season award, he rejoined the team on loan during 2012, providing six assists throughout that campaign.
Despite his on-field successes, including 62 caps for the South African national team, his later years were often hampered by injuries. After stints at Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland, and a brief return to South Africa with Bidvest Wits, Pienaar retired from professional play in March 2018. He has since transitioned into coaching, notably serving as an international ambassador for Everton and working with the U14 team at Sharjah FC.
