In short: Stuart Hall was a fixture of British television for decades, celebrated for his exuberant presenting style on shows like It's a Knockout. Yet, behind his public persona lay a series of criminal acts that eventually led to his imprisonment and the stripping of his national honours.

Born in 1929, Stuart Hall built a career as a BBC sports journalist and regional news presenter, becoming a household name through his enthusiastic commentary and game show hosting. His professional life was marked by high-profile roles, including his work on North West Tonight and his association with the phrase 'The Beautiful Game'. However, his reputation collapsed in 2012 following an anonymous letter sent to a journalist, which triggered a police investigation into historical sexual offences.

The legal proceedings against Hall were extensive. In April 2013, he admitted to 14 counts of indecent assault involving 13 girls, leading to an initial 15-month prison sentence. This term was later increased to 30 months following a review by the Court of Appeal, which noted his public denigration of his victims. Further trials in 2014 resulted in additional convictions, extending his total time in custody. Throughout this period, his attempts to shield his assets, including the transfer of his £1.2 million home, faced significant legal scrutiny.

The fallout extended to the BBC, where an inquiry found that Hall had assaulted 21 victims on the premises between 1967 and 1991. The report concluded that his status as a celebrity made him appear untouchable, preventing staff from reporting his behaviour to management. Consequently, the broadcaster removed his appearances from its archives. Hall, who was stripped of his OBE in 2013, was released from prison in December 2015 after serving half of his sentence, maintaining a controversial stance regarding his accusers.
