Superwoman is a recurring villainous counterpart to Wonder Woman across DC Comics' parallel universes.
In short: Across decades of storytelling, Superwoman has evolved from a simple evil mirror of Wonder Woman into a complex, shifting figure. Whether she is an Amazonian mass murderer, a manipulative editor, or a ruthless political infiltrator, she remains a central, unpredictable force within the villainous Crime Syndicate of America.
First appearing in 1964, the original Superwoman was introduced as a member of the Crime Syndicate of America from Earth-Three. This early iteration possessed super-strength, flight, and a magical lasso capable of changing shape. Unlike the Justice League, the Syndicate sought out challenges to their power, leading to numerous confrontations across parallel Earths. This version eventually met her end alongside the Secret Society of Super-Villains while attempting to save her home world from the Anti-Monitor's antimatter wave.
Post-Crisis continuity introduced a darker, more nuanced Superwoman, notably in the 2000 graphic novel JLA: Earth 2. This version, an Amazon born on Damnation Island, assumed the identity of Lois Lane to become the chief editor of the Daily Planet. She combined the traits of Wonder Woman and Lois Lane, possessing heat vision and a lasso that forced victims to lose their inhibitions. Her personal life was marked by complex, often toxic relationships with other Syndicate members like Ultraman and Owlman, and a strange, manipulative dynamic with Jimmy Olsen.
Following the 2011 New 52 reboot, the character was reimagined again, becoming pregnant and entangled with the Earth-3 version of Lex Luthor, known as Mazahs. This iteration eventually gave birth during the Darkseid War before being killed by Grail. More recently, a version based on Donna Troy emerged, trained by Queen Hippolyta to infiltrate Man's World. This Superwoman acts as an ambassador to the United States, exerting control over the government through her influence over President Oliver Queen, while plotting to eventually overthrow her mother and seize the throne of Themyscira.
