In short: Sushila Karki has broken two of Nepal's highest glass ceilings. First as the nation's first female chief justice, and later as the interim prime minister chosen by protesters following the 2025 Generation Z Protests, she has become a central figure in Nepal's ongoing democratic consolidation.

Karki’s political ascent is deeply rooted in her legal career and a reputation for integrity. Born in 1952 in Shankarpur, she was the eldest of seven children. Her commitment to democracy was forged during the 1990 People's Movement against Nepal's absolute monarchy, an era that saw her briefly imprisoned in Biratnagar. She completed her undergraduate studies at Mahendra Morang College in 1972. Later, she earned a master's degree in political science from Banaras Hindu University in India.

Her judicial career was marked by significant friction with political authorities. During her 2016–17 term as chief justice, she fought political bias, exemplified by the Supreme Court's 2017 decision to void the government's selection of Jaya Bahadur Chand as inspector general of police. This stance led to an impeachment motion by members of parliament, resulting in her automatic suspension before she eventually retired at age 65. In 2009, she took up a role as a temporary Supreme Court justice. Her permanent status was granted the following year.

Her transition to executive power occurred under extraordinary circumstances. Following the September 2025 Generation Z Protests, which saw the burning of parliament, protest leaders selected Karki as their candidate for interim prime minister. Her selection was finalized through an 'election' on a Discord server hosting over 145,000 protesters. After consultations with the army, she was sworn in on September 12, 2025. The decision to appoint her was communicated to the president's office. Her appointment was celebrated as a victory for transparency.

Karki's brief administration focused on stability and reform. She assembled a cabinet of reformist figures and established a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the violence and destruction caused during the protests. Her tenure concluded in March 2026 following parliamentary elections that saw the rise of Balendra Shah. She created a Reconstruction Fund to help repair damaged infrastructure. This administration helped facilitate a new generation of leaders.
