Sweden is reviving its military might to counter regional threats from the east
In short: After decades of downsizing following the Cold War, the Swedish Army is rapidly expanding. Once a neutral nation, Sweden has joined NATO and is shifting from a professional volunteer force back toward a modular, high-readiness structure capable of deploying 71 battalions within a single week to secure its territory.
The Swedish Army, which traces its origins to 1521, has undergone a profound structural evolution. For much of the post-Cold War era, the military focused on downsizing and transitioning toward a professional, all-volunteer force. However, the resurgence of the Russian Federation and its 2014 and 2022 attacks on Ukraine prompted a strategic pivot. Sweden has abandoned its long-standing neutrality to become a full member of NATO, reversing previous trends by expanding its active regiments and reintroducing the 1st Division in 2022 to bolster operational readiness.
The modern Swedish Army operates through a dual-structure system. Peacetime administrative units, known as depot units or regiments, are responsible for training and equipment. These units generate wartime formations, which are modular and designed to be arranged into combat teams ranging from company to brigade levels. Since 2014, the force has maintained approximately 50,000 soldiers in full-time or part-time duty. The current operational organization includes 8 mechanized maneuver battalions, 19 support battalions, 4 reserve heavy armored battalions, and 40 territorial defense battalions.
Readiness remains the primary objective of this reorganization. While the army previously struggled with economic constraints that made rapid mobilization difficult, the current goal is to maintain eight mechanized infantry battalions that are instantly available. The broader force of 71 battalions is designed to be fully deployable within one week. This shift reflects a move away from the mass-army model of the Cold War era toward a more agile, maneuver-focused force capable of responding to contemporary security challenges in Northern and Central Europe.
