In short: Rising 309 metres above the central business district, Sydney Tower is an architectural landmark that redefined the city skyline. Originally developed by AMP, this telecommunications and observation structure required a special exemption from height restrictions that once protected the flight paths of harbour-based flying boats during the pre-jet era.

Designed by architect Donald Crone, the tower project began with plans unveiled in March 1968. Before its construction, Sydney enforced a strict 279-metre height limit to accommodate flying boats. Construction of the tower itself commenced in 1975, eventually reaching a total height of 309 metres after a lightning rod was added to the spire in 1998. The project, which cost A$36 million, officially opened for public access on 25 September 1981.

The tower serves as a functional hub for both telecommunications and tourism. Visitors reach the observation deck, known as the Sydney Tower Eye, via three high-speed double-deck lifts that can complete the journey in 45 seconds under full-speed conditions. The deck is located 250 metres above ground level and offers 360-degree views, while the Skywalk—an open-air, glass-floored platform—extends further at 268 metres. The facility also hosts dining venues, including a revolving restaurant on level one.

Beyond its structural role, the tower has become a fixture of popular culture, appearing in films ranging from The Matrix to Finding Nemo. It has also been a site for public events, such as the annual Stair Challenge, which involves running up 1,504 stairs to raise funds for the Cancer Council. While ownership and branding have shifted over the decades—transitioning from the AMP Tower to the Westfield-branded Sydney Tower Eye—it remains the tallest structure in Sydney and a significant engineering achievement recognized by Engineers Australia.
