Why Portugal's Taça da Liga remains a unique outlier in European club football competitions
In short: The Taça da Liga is a distinct fixture in Portuguese football, yet it holds a peculiar status among domestic trophies. While it generates significant revenue for clubs and the league, winning the title offers no path to European qualification, setting it apart from the prestigious Taça de Portugal.
Established in the 2007–08 season following a proposal by Sporting CP and Boavista, the Taça da Liga serves as the third official competition for professional clubs in Portugal. It is organized by the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional and is open to teams competing in the top two tiers of the national league system. Unlike other domestic cups, its primary function is to increase the volume of matches and generate additional revenue for the participating clubs and the governing body.
The competition has undergone several format changes to optimize its schedule and commercial appeal. The current structure, implemented in the 2021–22 season, involves a series of one-legged ties and group stages that culminate in a knockout phase at neutral grounds. During the 2022–23 season, the format was further adapted to accommodate the fixture congestion caused by the 2022 FIFA World Cup, utilizing an expanded group stage to ensure all matches could be completed during the international break.
Benfica stands as the most successful club in the tournament's history, securing eight titles, including four consecutive wins between 2009 and 2012. Individual records are equally impressive, with players like Luisão holding the record for most tournament wins and appearances. The competition has also seen remarkable individual performances, such as Paulinho’s record of 21 career goals and Rabiola’s four-goal match in 2012. As of 2026, Vitória de Guimarães holds the title after defeating Braga in the final, marking their first victory in the competition.
