The cradle of modern whaling and Norway's oldest city
In short: Tønsberg is a city defined by its antiquity and its industrial reach. From its 9th-century roots as a Viking stronghold to its role as the epicenter of the global whaling industry, this Norwegian metropolis has consistently shaped the nation's maritime identity and historical narrative.
Tønsberg is widely regarded as Norway's oldest city, with origins dating back to the 9th century. While historians traditionally date the town's existence to 871 based on the Battle of Hafrsfjord, archaeological evidence confirms a farm settlement existed by the end of the 8th century. The city's name, derived from Old Norse, originally referred to the fortifications on Slottsfjellet (Castle Mountain), a site that provided a near-impregnable natural fortress. This strategic importance was cemented in the 13th century when King Haakon Haakonson established Tønsberg Fortress, which became Norway's largest castle of that era.
Beyond its medieval history, Tønsberg became a global powerhouse in the 19th century as the 'cradle of modern whaling.' In the 1850s, it served as the primary base for Arctic and Antarctic whaling operations. Local pioneer Svend Foyn, born in the city's best-preserved merchant's yard, Foynegården, secured a monopoly on European whaling until 1883 through his patent rights on whaling techniques. While Tønsberg eventually lost its dominance to the neighboring city of Sandefjord by the early 20th century, its influence on the global whaling industry remains a significant historical legacy.
Today, Tønsberg serves as the administrative center for Vestfold county. It maintains a unique geographical footprint, with parts of the city actually extending onto the island of Nøtterøy in Færder Municipality. The city balances its deep historical roots—including the 9th-century Oseberg Ship excavation and the site of the ancient Haugating assembly—with modern life as the ninth-largest urban area in Norway.
