The island where ancient temples meet futuristic innovation
In short: Taiwan is often described as a hidden gem of Asia, balancing a landscape of marble cliffs and mist-draped forests with cutting-edge progress. It is a place where traditions that have survived for centuries exist alongside modern life, creating a unique cultural harmony between the old world and the new.
Located about 100 miles (160 km) from southeastern China's shoreline, Taiwan sits within the western Pacific Ocean. The main island measures about 245 miles (395 km) long from north to south and reaches a maximum width of 90 miles (145 km). While Taipei serves as the seat of government for the Republic of China (ROC), the nation's jurisdiction extends beyond the main landmass to include 22 islands in the Taiwan group and another 64 islands in the P’eng-hu archipelago. The island's history is marked by a complex series of shifts in governance. Before the 1600s, Taiwan was self-governing without a central authority. It later became a Dutch colony for roughly 40 years during the early to mid-17th century before regaining independence for about two decades.
China took control in the late 17th century and ruled for some two centuries until Japan acquired the island as a colony in 1895 following the first Sino-Japanese War. Today, the region is defined by its diverse geography and cultural preservation. Travelers find volcanic shores where coral reefs meet black rock, and landmarks like Taroko Gorge and Sun Moon Lake. It remains a site of significant geopolitical complexity, with various island groups—such as Matsu, Quemoy, Diaoyutai (Senkaku), the Paracels, and the Spratly Islands—subject to overlapping claims by Taiwan, China, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
The coexistence of nature and innovation is central to the Taiwanese identity. From the lantern-lit alleys of Jiufen to the mist-draped forests of Alishan, the island offers a cinematic contrast between its rugged natural beauty and its role as a hub for modern industry.
