How an English teacher built a multi-billion dollar retail empire
In short: After graduating from university in 1997, Tatyana Kim worked as an English tutor before launching Wildberries in 2004. Today, she is Russia's first self-made female billionaire. Her massive retail empire now manages over 90,000 pickup points and utilizes advanced, AI-powered warehouses to handle nearly 90% of deliveries in her markets.
Tatyana Kim’s ascent from a primary school teacher’s daughter to a global business leader is marked by rapid, often volatile, expansion. After graduating from Kolomna University in 1997, Kim initially worked as an English tutor. In 2004, following the birth of her first child, she founded Wildberries. While the company's official history suggests she started without capital experience, she utilized funds from her husband, Vladislav Bakalchuk, who had recently sold his ISP, UTech, to Gazprombank for $7.5 million.
The company's growth trajectory has been extraordinary. By 2019, Wildberries was valued at $1 billion, and by 2021, Kim's fortune grew by 800% to $13 billion. The business model evolved significantly during the 2014–2016 financial crisis, shifting to a platform model similar to Amazon. Under her leadership, the retailer expanded across much of Eurasia, including Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Georgia.
However, Kim's empire has faced intense scrutiny and internal turmoil. Her business has been subject to allegations of selling counterfeit goods and has faced sanctions from Ukraine and Poland. The company's internal history is also marked by a dramatic legal and personal battle with her former husband. Following a 2024 raid on the Moscow headquarters and the subsequent arrest of Vladislav Bakalchuk on murder charges, a Moscow court awarded Kim 100% ownership of Wildberries. By the start of 2026, the combined RWB entity, comprising the Russ advertising agency, held an estimated worth of roughly $12.6 billion.
