How a remote Wyoming county became a unique political and economic outlier in America
In short: Teton County, Wyoming, defies conventional expectations. Once a staunchly Republican stronghold, it has transformed into a Democratic island within a deeply conservative state. Simultaneously, it ranks among the wealthiest counties in the United States, driven by an influx of high-net-worth residents who have reshaped its local landscape and economy.
Established in 1921 after separating from Lincoln County, Teton County was initially so sparsely populated and economically modest that it required a special act from the Wyoming Legislature to gain county status. Today, the region is defined by its geography, encompassing the Jackson Hole ski area, the entirety of Grand Teton National Park, and a significant portion of Yellowstone National Park. This natural splendor has attracted a demographic shift that has fundamentally altered the county's political identity.
For most of the 21st century, Wyoming has been one of the most reliably Republican states in presidential elections. Yet, Teton County has moved in the opposite direction. Since 1992, the only Republican presidential candidate to win the county was George W. Bush in 2000, aided by the presence of local resident Dick Cheney on the ticket. By 2024, Teton stood alone as the only county in the state to support Kamala Harris, even as Donald Trump secured a record-breaking 71.6% of the statewide vote.
This political realignment coincides with a dramatic economic surge. A 2019 report from Bloomberg L.P. identified Teton as having the highest average per capita income of any county in the nation, reaching $252,000. This wealth is reflected in the local housing market, where median home prices exceeded $1 million by the end of 2021. This concentration of extreme wealth, which includes high-profile residents like Bill Gates, has created a unique social and economic environment that stands in stark contrast to the rest of the state.
