In short: Texarkana is a rare dual municipality, split between Texas and Arkansas. While they maintain separate governments, the two cities are economically and socially integrated, functioning as a single metropolitan core. This border town's very name is a portmanteau, blending the identities of Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

The identity of Texarkana is inextricably linked to the railroads of the late 19th century. In 1874, settlement began where the Texas and Pacific met the Cairo and Fulton railways. This strategic connection turned the area into a vital railroad and bus terminal, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers across the region.

The origin of the name 'Texarkana' remains a subject of local legend rather than a single confirmed fact. One popular tradition credits railroad surveyor Col. Gus Knobel, who allegedly painted the name on a plank and nailed it to a tree during construction. Other accounts suggest the name came from a Red River steamboat named The Texarkana around 1860, or perhaps from a 'Texarkana Bitters' drink concocted by a Louisiana storekeeper named Swindle.

Today, the two cities are divided by State Line Avenue. While Texarkana, Texas, has a population of 36,193 as of the 2020 census, its Arkansas counterpart is also a key part of the metropolitan area. Such unusual geography shapes local architecture; notably, the Federal Courthouse remains the sole federal building spanning a state boundary.

The region's climate is humid subtropical, characterized by significant temperature extremes. In 1936, the highest temperature recorded was 117 °F (47 °C), while the lowest was –6 °F (–21 °C) in late December 1989. The area also experiences unusual weather phenomena, such as a rare 'animal rain' in December 2021, when fish fell from the sky into local yards and streets.
