In short: Fifty years after the 1973 killing spree, the slasher icon Leatherface returns. This 2022 Netflix installment shifts the focus to a group of young entrepreneurs attempting to gentrify an abandoned Texas town, only to find a vengeful survivor and a relentless killer waiting in the shadows.

The 2022 film, directed by David Blue Garcia, serves as a direct sequel to the original 1973 events. The narrative follows Melody and Dante, young entrepreneurs who travel to the abandoned town of Harlow to auction off old properties. Their goal of creating a trendy, gentrified area is interrupted when they encounter Ginny, an elderly woman claiming ownership of a dilapidated orphanage. The tension escalates when the silent, towering Leatherface emerges, murdering officers and eventually killing Ginny by using her face as a mask.

The production faced significant hurdles and creative shifts. Originally, Ryan and Andy Tohill were signed to direct, but they were replaced by Garcia after the studio was unimpressed with the initial footage. To capture the essence of the franchise, the filmmakers utilized an "old school" approach, employing vintage lenses and practical effects for the gore. Interestingly, despite the Texas setting, much of the principal photography took place in Bulgaria during August 2020, with the crew working to make the location resemble West Texas near the Fort Davis mountains.

While the film achieved significant viewership—debuting at number two on Netflix's global charts with 29.2 million hours viewed in its first week—it met with critical resistance. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 30% positive rating from 162 critics, with a consensus suggesting that while the gore is present, the character of Leatherface may have lost his ability to terrify. Despite these reviews, the film remains a major entry in the franchise, produced by Legendary Pictures, Exurbia Films, and Bad Hombre.
