The Texas Triangle: a high-density megaregion driving the state's future
In short: While Texas is famous for its vast, sprawling landscapes, its true power is concentrated in a dense, triangular core. This urban megaregion contains most of the state's largest cities and is home to nearly 75% of all Texans, acting as a massive economic and cultural engine.
One of eleven US megaregions, the Texas Triangle consists of urban clusters linked by economic and cultural bonds. Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio act as the four main hubs, linked via Interstates 10, 35, and 45. The area spans vast distances, with three edges measuring 271, 198, and 241 miles. Although highly influential, this triangle covers under a quarter of the total land in Texas.
The region has experienced rapid demographic shifts. In 2004, the Triangle held 13.8 million people, representing over 70% of the state's population. By 2020, that number had grown to nearly 21 million, accounting for nearly 75% of Texans. By 2025, the population reached nearly 23 million. This growth has transformed the political landscape of the state. While many of its counties were conservative strongholds from the 1960s through 2004, the 2008 election saw Barack Obama flip Dallas, Harris, and Bexar counties to the Democratic party.
The complexity of the region is reflected in its diverse demographics and political leanings. In 2020, San Antonio was identified by the US Census as the largest Latino-Hispanic populated city in the Triangle. Meanwhile, Fort Bend County was noted for having the largest ethnic Asian population in Texas, making up 22.2 percent of the county's residents. While the anchoring cities often lean politically left-wing, the region also contains many rural, conservative counties where Republicans poll their best.
