A modern 'dream city' built on the bones of early Texas history
In short: The Colony, Texas, might look like a contemporary suburban success story, but its identity is rooted in a deliberate 1970s branding exercise. Developers sought to create a 'dream city' by weaving a sense of kinship with the state's pioneer past into a master-planned community.
The Colony was not an organic settlement but a planned development that began in 1973. To build a 'dream city' mainly featuring single-family houses, Fox and Jacobs, the developers, bought 3,000 acres near Farm to Market Road 423 and State Highway 121. The name 'The Colony' was chosen to evoke a sense of connection to early Texas history, specifically referencing the Peters Colony. This historical connection is physically anchored in the area by sites like the Bridges Settlement, established during the Republic of Texas, and Bridges Cemetery, which dates back to 1857.
The city's growth was marked by strategic administrative moves. Frisco's extraterritorial jurisdiction was removed from the project in 1977, following the start of building works during 1974. January 1977 marked its formal incorporation, and by 1979, it had attained home rule city status. The community expanded further in 1987 when it voted to merge with the lakeside community of Eastvale. Today, it serves as a major hub featuring the Grandscape development and a growing entertainment corridor.
Geographically, the city is defined by its relationship with Lewisville Lake. Containing approximately 23 miles of shoreline, the lake provides the basis for its nickname, 'City by the Lake.' While the city is now a thriving urban center where 99.7% of residents live in urban areas, it maintains a focus on its natural surroundings through initiatives like the Shoreline Trail and local wildlife programs.
