The circular logic of India's newest rapid transit loop
In short: Most metro systems are linear, moving people from point A to B. The Thane Metro breaks this mold by forming a continuous loop. This unique design aims to weave through the city's core, connecting major hubs like Thane Junction and Wagle Estate in a singular, integrated circuit.
The Thane Integral Ring Metro is currently under construction as a 29 km (18 mi) rapid transit line serving Thane, Maharashtra. Unlike standard linear corridors, this project is designed as a loop service. It will feature 22 stations, with the majority—20 stations—being elevated. Only two specific stations near the Thane Railway Station are approved to be underground to navigate dense urban infrastructure. The project's journey has been marked by significant technical and financial pivots. Initially proposed by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) in 2018 as a heavy rail system, it was later downscaled to a light rail model in December 2020 to manage costs. This move faced public backlash over capacity concerns, leading the TMC to revert the plan back to heavy rail in 2023.
The final configuration includes an estimated cost of ₹12,200.10 crore (US$1.3 billion), with the central and state governments expected to provide equal equity. Execution is now managed by Maha Metro rather than the local corporation. A key feature of the loop is its connectivity; it will provide interchange facilities with Mumbai Metro Line 4 and Line 5, as well as various bus terminals and railway lines. The project received final central government approval on August 14, 2024, followed by state approval on September 30, 2024. Construction officially commenced with the laying of the foundation on October 5, 2024.
The loop structure is intended to serve as a backbone for Thane's core areas, including Wagle Estate, Manpada, and Balkum. By connecting these regions in a circuit, the metro seeks to provide more fluid movement across the city compared to traditional hub-and-spoke models. Additionally, Maha Metro is already exploring further expansion, having been tasked with feasibility studies for corridors connecting Thane to Kalwa, Mumbra, and Diva.
