The Devil Wears Prada named themselves after a book they fundamentally misunderstood
In short: Formed in Dayton, Ohio, in 2005, this metalcore band chose their name to signal an anti-materialistic stance. They mistakenly believed the novel The Devil Wears Prada critiqued consumerism. Upon realizing the book held no such message, they kept the name, reinterpreting it to mean that God ignores earthly possessions.
The band emerged during the mid-2000s, quickly gaining traction within the Christian metalcore scene. Their debut full-length, Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord, arrived in 2006, followed by the breakthrough success of Plagues in 2007, which reached number 57 on the Billboard 200. By 2009, their third album, With Roots Above and Branches Below, climbed to number 11 on the same chart, cementing their status as a prominent act that pioneered the integration of electronic elements into metalcore.
Over two decades, the group navigated significant lineup changes and evolving thematic interests. While early work focused on Christian themes, later records like 2011's Dead Throne explored anti-idolatry, while EPs like Zombie and Space ventured into apocalyptic and sci-fi narratives. By 2021, guitarist Kyle Sipress clarified in a Reddit AMA that the band had moved away from promoting themselves as a Christian group, noting that most members no longer identified as such.
The band's history is marked by both creative evolution and profound tragedy. In May 2025, founding drummer Daniel Williams died in a private plane crash in San Diego. The incident, which also claimed the life of the plane's owner, Dave Shapiro, occurred just weeks after Williams had accepted a new position at Apple Inc. Despite the loss, the band continued their trajectory, releasing their ninth studio album, Flowers, in November 2025 and planning extensive touring for 2026.
