The Doon School: An Indian Boarding Institution Modeled on British Public School Traditions
In short: Founded in 1935, The Doon School in Dehradun is a selective, all-boys residential institution. While often compared to Eton, it was designed to be distinctively Indian in its moral outlook. Today, it remains a prestigious, competitive environment that balances rigorous academics with a deep commitment to outdoor education and service.
The Doon School was the vision of Satish Ranjan Das, a Calcutta lawyer who sought to create an Indian public school that combined the structure of British institutions with a uniquely Indian spirit. Despite opposition from figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, who viewed the model as inegalitarian, Das established the Indian Public Schools' Society in 1928. The school finally opened in 1935 on the former site of the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, with Arthur E. Foot, a former science master at Eton, serving as the first headmaster.
The school's ethos was shaped by early masters like Foot, J.A.K. Martyn, and mountaineer Gurdial Singh, who emphasized a philosophy of service over privilege. This commitment to holistic development remains central, with students engaging in around 80 extracurricular activities. The campus itself, known as Chandbagh, is a biodiversity hotspot housing over 150 tree species and 169 bird species, a legacy of the site's history as a forestry research center. The school operates on a house system, where students develop fierce loyalty to one of five main houses, each named after early donors.
Doon has frequently drawn media attention for the influence of its alumni, leading to the occasional, controversial label of a 'Doon Cabinet' during the 1980s. While the school has faced criticism for its perceived elitism and rising fees, recent administrations have prioritized financial aid, with over 25% of students currently receiving needs-based bursaries. The school continues to evolve, transitioning from its original focus on North Indian students to a more diverse demographic, while maintaining its rigorous academic standards and its status as a premier institution in the Indian educational landscape.
