Known as the Eton of the East, this Darjeeling boarding school sits above the clouds.
In short: Founded in 1823, St. Paul's School in Darjeeling is one of Asia's oldest public schools. Once the highest school in the world at 7,600 feet, it maintains a rigorous, traditional boarding culture that has produced diplomats, business leaders, and military heroes while fostering a unique, cosmopolitan student body.
Established in Calcutta on May 1, 1823, by Daniel Corrie, the institution was initially designed to provide an affordable education for the sons of Europeans and East Indians. It underwent several relocations before settling into its current Jalapahar estate in Darjeeling in 1864. At the time of its move, the school sat at an elevation of approximately 7,600 feet above sea level, earning it the distinction of being the highest school in the world.
The school's identity is deeply rooted in British tradition, earning it the nickname Eton of the East. Its motto, derived from Virgil's Aeneid, translates to a commitment to following higher things after receiving advice. This ethos is reflected in the school's structure, which is divided into Primary, Junior, and Senior wings. The student body, known as Paulites, adheres to strict dress codes, including prescribed suits and umbrellas for off-campus excursions. The school's chapel serves as the central hub for community life, while extracurriculars range from traditional marching bands to modern cybernetics.
Following Indian Independence in 1947, the school transitioned from its colonial origins to become an elite institution for wealthy students from India and across Asia. Its leadership has been marked by long-serving rectors like L.J. Goddard, who guided the school through the shift from British rule to independence between 1934 and 1964. Today, the school remains highly regarded, consistently ranking among the top boarding schools in India. Its alumni include notable figures such as businessman Anand Burman, filmmaker Anjan Dutt, and various high-ranking diplomats and military officers.
