In short: Formed in Auckland in 2007, The Naked and Famous rose from local independent roots to international stages. Their name, inspired by a lyric about the nature of celebrity, reflects a career defined by constant evolution, from their chart-topping debut to their recent return to live performance after a long hiatus.

The band originated in 2007 when Alisa Xayalith and Thom Powers began collaborating on early extended plays while studying at the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand. Their breakthrough arrived in 2010 with the single Young Blood, which reached the top of the New Zealand charts, marking a rare achievement for a local artist at the time. This success paved the way for their debut studio album, Passive Me, Aggressive You, released later that year on their own label, Somewhat Damaged.

Following extensive global touring between 2010 and 2012, the group relocated to Los Angeles. This move signaled a shift in their creative process, as they sought to record music that could be performed live without relying on backing tracks. Their subsequent albums, including In Rolling Waves and Simple Forms, were produced through collaborative sessions in California, often involving engineers like Billy Bush. By the time they released their fourth studio album, Recover, in 2020, the band had undergone several lineup changes, with founding members and later additions departing the project.

The band's moniker carries a specific lineage, derived from the song Tricky Kid by the English musician Tricky. The track features a line from a song by The Presidents of the United States of America that questions the universal desire for notoriety. This theme of ambivalence toward fame has remained a subtle backdrop to their career. After a five-year break from performing together, the duo reunited for a show at the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix, marking their first joint appearance since 2020.
