The Doctor's final stand: a reality-altering farewell to the Fifteenth incarnation
In short: When the Earth began collapsing out of existence, the Doctor faced more than just a villain. In a high-stakes battle to prevent the erasure of a child, the Fifteenth Doctor performed a desperate, timeline-shifting regeneration that changed everything.
Released on 31 May 2025, "The Reality War" serves as the epic conclusion to the Fifteenth Doctor's era. The episode follows the Doctor and his allies as they attempt to thwart the Rani, who seeks to resurrect Omega, the first Time Lord, to establish a new Gallifreyan empire. The conflict is deeply personal: the Doctor must protect Poppy, an infant born of an altered reality, from being erased from existence as reality is restored.
The episode's mechanics involve complex temporal manipulation. The Rani utilized a wish from Conrad Clark, combined with the power of the infant god Desiderium, to trap Earth in a time loop. The Doctor employed the doors within the Time Hotel, designed by Steven Moffat, to recover the lost memories of UNIT personnel and his companion, Belinda Chandra. The climax involves a massive, skeletal Omega being brought into the universe, only to be forced back into prison using the Vindicator.
While the episode featured a significant cameo from Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, the narrative reception was polarized. Critics from outlets like GamesRadar+ and Den of Geek praised the emotional weight of Ncuti Gatwa's departure but criticized the handling of Belinda Chandra's character arc and the use of established villains. The episode concluded with a profound 'bigeneration' twist, where the Doctor used the energy of a new regeneration to shift the timeline, ensuring Poppy's existence at the cost of the Doctor's personal connection to her.
