New York City serves as the gritty backdrop for Frank Castle's journey
In short: While Frank Castle travels across the United States to see the country he fought for, the production of the second season of The Punisher was deeply rooted in New York. From the streets of The Bellmores to the capital city of Albany, the setting shapes the character's evolution.
Frank Castle weighs accepting his role in the second and last season of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series, The Punisher. To ground this journey, showrunner Steve Lightfoot had Castle travel across the United States to gain a perspective on the country he fought for but had never truly seen. This travel allowed for a more relaxed aesthetic, with costume designer Lorraine Calvert dressing him in blue jeans for a portion of the season. This narrative arc explores whether he should fully embrace his violent mantle. The series was produced by Marvel Television alongside ABC Studios and Bohemian Risk Productions.
Much of the actual production took place within New York. Filming began on March 10, 2018, in The Bellmores, New York, and continued through August 2018. The production also moved to Albany, New York, in mid-July 2018. These locations provided the setting for the intense character arcs, including Billy Russo's recovery from brain damage and facial scarring, and Dinah Madani's fixation on him while at the hospital. The cast features Ben Barnes and Amber Rose Revah, who both appeared in the previous season. Additionally, Josh Stewart and Floriana Lima joined the returning ensemble for this installment.
The season, consisting of 13 episodes, premiered on Netflix on January 18, 2019. Although it was the most sought-after streaming original in the US from January 27 to February 2, 2019, the show earned varied reviews. Critics were split between the action-packed elements and the portrayal of Frank Castle, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 61% approval rating and Metacritic assigning a score of 58 out of 100. Following its initial run, the series was removed from Netflix in early 2022. It later transitioned to Disney+ for viewers in several international markets.
