How Gotham's most notorious criminal kingpin climbed to the top of the underworld
In short: Following the events of the 2022 film The Batman, this crime drama miniseries chronicles the calculated ascent of Oz Cobb. As he navigates the fractured criminal landscape of Gotham City, the show reveals the complex, often heartbreaking ambition driving a man determined to become the city's ultimate underworld power.
Developed by Lauren LeFranc, the series functions as a spin-off from the 2022 feature film The Batman. The narrative centers on Oz Cobb, a disfigured former underling of the late crime boss Carmine Falcone. Born with a clubfoot that forces a waddle-like gait, Cobb is portrayed by Colin Farrell, who reprises his role from the film. The production team opted to shorten the character's surname from the traditional comic book version, Cobblepot, to Cobb, viewing it as a more grounded and plausible name for the setting.
The plot tracks Cobb’s ruthless maneuvering to seize control of Gotham’s criminal hierarchy. His primary adversary is Sofia Gigante, the daughter of Carmine Falcone. Recently released from Arkham State Hospital, Sofia adopts her mother’s maiden name to distance herself from her father’s legacy while fighting to secure her own dominance. The power vacuum left by Carmine Falcone’s death draws in various factions, including the Maroni crime family, led by Salvatore Maroni, and the Gotham Triads, complicating Cobb's path to the top.
Production of the eight-episode series was a lengthy undertaking. Development began in September 2021, with HBO Max greenlighting the project in March 2022. Filming commenced in New York in March 2023 but faced a significant pause due to Hollywood labor disputes that summer. Work restarted in late autumn and reached completion by February 2024. The series, which eventually moved to HBO, earned critical acclaim for its writing and performances, securing numerous award nominations, including recognition for both Farrell and his co-star Cristin Milioti.
Beyond the central power struggle, the series delves into the personal history and vulnerabilities of its lead. Cobb is supported by his mother, Francis, who suffers from Parkinson's and Lewy body dementia, and his young driver, Victor Aguilar. These relationships provide a window into the character's internal life, exploring the intersection of his villainy and the personal trauma that shaped his rise.
