A medieval fake or a miracle? The mystery of the Shroud
In short: The Shroud of Turin has been scrutinized for over a century, sparking intense debate between those who see it as an ancient relic and those who view it as a sophisticated medieval creation.
In 1898, photographer Secondo Pia captured the first clear photographic evidence of the image on the cloth. This sparked a modern era of investigation into whether the artifact is a first-century burial cloth or an elaborate forgery. A major turning point occurred in 1988 when radiocarbon testing conducted by laboratories in Oxford, Zurich, and Arizona dated the linen to between 1260 and 1390 AD.
Despite these findings, the debate persists regarding the specific sampling methods used and the true history of the cloth. The documentary examines centuries of documents and physical evidence to distinguish known facts from disputed theories about how the distinctive image was actually produced.
