The indie band that tied Elvis Presley's record for hits

In short: In 1992, an English indie rock group achieved a feat of statistical dominance rarely seen in music history. By releasing twelve singles in a single year, they matched the legendary Elvis Presley for the most top 40 hits in one calendar year—all while maintaining their fiercely independent roots.

Formed in Leeds in 1985 by David Gedge and Keith Gregory, The Wedding Present emerged from the 'C86' indie scene. The band’s name was a tribute to their shared fandom of The Birthday Party. Despite being categorized by some as 'shambling'—a label they vehemently rejected—the group established a reputation for fast-paced rhythm guitar and lyrics centered on love, lust, heartbreak, and revenge.

Their commercial peak arrived in 1992 under an RCA contract. They released twelve 7-inch singles, each with a limited pressing of 10,000 copies. While Elvis Presley reached his record through archival re-issues, The Wedding Present achieved theirs with entirely original material. The demand was so high that distributors began poaching stock from international markets to satisfy the UK audience.

The band's history is marked by significant shifts in collaboration and geography. They recorded a unique series of Ukrainian folk songs encouraged by DJ John Peel, and later moved production to Minnesota to work with Steve Albini. After various lineup changes and a period under the name Cinerama, Gedge eventually rebranded the project back to The Wedding Present in 2004 to reflect their signature sound.

The group's influence extends beyond their own discography; notably, their cover of Pavement's 'Box Elder' was instrumental in helping that American indie band achieve a breakthrough. Today, they remain a definitive example of the transition from underground DIY ethics to major-label chart success.
