In short: Born from the Isle of Wight in 1979, Level 42 transformed from an instrumental jazz-funk outfit into international chart-toppers. Through shifting lineups and unexpected genre pivots, they mastered the art of the pop hook while maintaining a sophisticated, complex musical foundation.

The band's origins lie in the Isle of Wight, where Mark King, Phil Gould, and the Gould brothers, Phil and Boon, played together as teenagers. The group's identity was shaped by a fusion of influences, from the jazz of Miles Davis to the funk of Jan Hammer. Interestingly, the band's name is a nod to Douglas Adams' 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,' referencing the number 42 as the ultimate answer to life, the universe, and everything.

While they began as an instrumental act, the band eventually embraced vocals, utilizing a distinctive contrast between Mike Lindup's falsetto harmonies and Mark King's deep tenor. This transition helped them achieve massive commercial success in the mid-1980s. Their 1986 hit 'Lessons in Love' became their biggest selling single, reaching number one in several countries, including Germany, Denmark, and South Africa, and peaking at number three in the UK.

However, this era of prosperity was marked by internal volatility. The late 1980s saw the departure of original members Boon Gould and Phil Gould, both citing exhaustion. The band also faced profound tragedy with the death of guitarist Alan Murphy in 1 and 1989. Despite various personnel changes—including the recruitment of musicians like Gary Husband and Jakko Jakszyk—the band's ability to navigate these shifts allowed them to remain a significant force in the UK music scene until their 1994 disbandment and subsequent 2001 reformation.
