A six-minute incident that defined a decade of heartbreak
In short: In the 2018 Telugu romantic drama Tholi Prema, a single impulsive moment on a train sets a lifelong cycle of separation in motion. Spanning years and continents, the story explores how a fleeting encounter can haunt a person even 6,000 miles away.
Directed by Venky Atluri in his directorial debut, the film follows Aditya, a student whose life is marked by impulsive decisions. The narrative begins with a high-stakes moment on a train journey toward Hyderabad, where Aditya risks his life to retrieve a vodka-spiked coke bottle, an act that leads to his first encounter with Varsha. This brief, intense connection evolves into a university romance, but the relationship eventually collapses due to Aditya's impulsive nature.
The story shifts from the vibrant settings of Hyderabad and Vizag to the more somber atmosphere of London, where Aditya has moved to pursue a master's degree. Despite his academic success, he remains emotionally tethered to the past. The distance of 6,000 miles cannot sever the bond, as Varsha eventually reappears in his professional life as his superior. This reunion forces a confrontation with the memories of their relationship, specifically a pivotal six-minute incident that Varsha claims has kept him stuck in the past.
While critics offered varying perspectives—with some praising the 'nuanced writing' and 'incredible' performances by Varun Tej and Raashii Khanna, and others noting the use of 'overused plot devices'—the film achieved significant commercial success. Released on 10 February 2018, it grossed over ₹45 crore at the box office. The film's financial reach was vast, with significant shares recorded in regions like Nizam, Karnataka, and the USA, eventually reaching a total worldwide gross of 451 million.
