In short: Arjun Reddy is a volatile surgeon whose descent into addiction and anger management issues captivated audiences. While the film's themes of substance abuse drew criticism, its massive global success was fueled by a script that drew heavily from director Sandeep Vanga's own experiences as a physiotherapy student.

Released on 25 August 2017, Arjun Reddy is a Telugu-language romantic drama that follows the life of Arjun Reddy Deshmukh, a brilliant but highly volatile house surgeon. The narrative tracks his intense, possessive relationship with student Preethi Shetty and his subsequent spiral into alcoholism and illicit drug use following their separation. This self-destructive path eventually leads to a medical inquiry after Arjun collapses during a critical operation, resulting in a five-year suspension of his medical license. His volatile temperament and cultural differences caused Preethi's father to oppose their marriage. This conflict eventually led to Arjun's arrest and his father's decision to banish him from their home.

Creating the movie was a protracted process; Sandeep Vanga spent two years writing the screenplay, and the entire project required four to five years to complete. Despite being considered a risky investment by many producers, the film was eventually financed by Vanga's brother, Pranay Reddy Vanga, and their father. The production was filmed across various locations, including Hyderabad, Mangalore, Dehradun, New Delhi, and Italy, and was completed in 86 working days. The film's soundtrack and score were composed by Radhan and Harshvardhan Rameshwar. Additionally, the cinematography was handled by Raj Thota.

The production proved highly lucrative, earning ₹51 crore across the globe and yielding a ₹25.5 crore share for distributors. While it received widespread critical acclaim and six nominations at the 65th Filmfare Awards South, it was also a subject of debate due to its depiction of substance abuse and self-destruction. Vijay Deverakonda's performance earned him the Best Telugu Actor award at the Filmfare Awards South, marking a major milestone in his career. The movie was later remade in Hindi as Kabir Singh. It also saw two Tamil adaptations, titled Adithya Varma and Varmaa.
