The complex underground cities of the American prairie
In short: Beneath the grass lies a vast, hidden civilization. This documentary explores the sophisticated social structures and survival strategies of prairie dogs, revealing a world of teamwork and rivalry.
Prairie dogs inhabit massive underground colonies composed of family clans. These groups are linked by extensive tunnel networks that can stretch for kilometers across the North American grasslands. One of the animal kingdom's intricate social structures is sustained by this underground network.
Survival in these colonies requires high-level cooperation to defend against predators like coyotes, rattlesnakes, and birds of prey. The rodents use a sophisticated communication system of precise calls to warn neighbors of danger. However, the society also involves internal friction, including territorial disputes and fierce rivalries between neighboring families.
