In short: How did a Cambridge Footlights vice president transform into a BAFTA-nominated writer and award-winning comedian? Follow the trajectory of Tom Basden, from his early success at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards to his celebrated work co-creating the ancient Rome sitcom Plebs, alongside a career spanning stage, film, and music.

Born in Sutton, Greater London, in 1980, Tom Basden’s path to comedic prominence was paved through prestigious academic and theatrical institutions. After attending King's College School in Wimbledon, he moved to Pembroke College, Cambridge. During his time there, he served as vice president of the Cambridge Footlights, working alongside a cohort of notable contemporaries including Dan Stevens and Tim Key.

Basden’s breakthrough in the comedy circuit arrived at the 2007 Edinburgh Comedy Awards, where he was nominated for Best Newcomer. That same year, his one-man show, 'Tom Basden Won't Say Anything', secured the if.comedy award for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Tim Key, a regular creative partner, frequently appeared alongside him in the prize-winning short 'The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island'.

His screenwriting includes the Channel 4 production 'Fresh Meat', earning a 2012 BAFTA Craft Awards nod for Break-Through Talent, as well as the ITV comedy 'Plebs', which secured a 2014 Royal Television Society award for Best Scripted Comedy. His theatrical repertoire includes the 2010 play 'Party', which received critical acclaim from The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph, and 'Joseph K', a Kafka-inspired play that was longlisted for the 2011 Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

Beyond television and stage, Basden has ventured into film and music. He co-wrote the 2025 feature 'The Ballad of Wallis Island' and performed as part of the fictional band 'McGwyer Mortimer' alongside Carey Mulligan. His diverse roles have seen him portraying figures ranging from sound engineer Dan in 'David Brent: Life on the Road' to Jeremy Corbyn in 'The Windsors'.
