How the Cambridge Footlights shaped the future of modern British television comedy
In short: Al Roberts, a central figure in the comedy trio Sheeps, has quietly become a linchpin of contemporary British humor. From his formative years in the Cambridge Footlights to his recent writing role on the UK version of Saturday Night Live, Roberts has consistently defined the weird, accessible, and silly aesthetic.
Al Roberts began his career at the University of Cambridge, where he served as President of the Footlights from 2008 to 2009. During this period, he performed in the 125th-anniversary tour show Devils and the 2009 production Wishful Thinking. His work with the Footlights established a lasting creative partnership with Daran Johnson and Liam Williams, with whom he formed the comedy trio Sheeps. This group has been a fixture at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for over a decade, performing shows in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2024, and 2025.
Beyond his live work, Roberts has been a frequent presence in experimental television. In 2015, he appeared in the BBC Three pilot People Time, a sketch show that garnered significant critical acclaim from outlets like The Guardian and Chortle, which compared its potential to the cult classic Big Train. Although the project was not commissioned as a series, it paved the way for the web series 2016: Year Friends, which drew stylistic inspiration from British mockumentaries like The Office. Roberts later gained wider recognition for his role as Al in the sitcom Stath Lets Flats, a part written specifically for him by Jamie Demetriou.
Roberts’ influence extends across various media, including music and digital animation. In 2024, Sheeps released A Very Sheeps Christmas, an album comprising 20 original tracks developed over a ten-year span. He also appeared in the 2019 Channel 4 Comedy Blap Sam Campbell: Get Real Dude, a project noted for its blend of puppetry and animation. His impact on the industry is recognized by peers; comedian Abi Tedder has described him as perhaps the funniest person she has ever seen on stage. In 2026, Roberts expanded his reach further by joining the writing team for the UK edition of Saturday Night Live.
