How a University Comic Strip Became a Major Texas Film Production Powerhouse
In short: Before it was a powerhouse housing the largest green screen in Texas, Troublemaker Studios began as a humble production company named after a student comic strip. Founded by Robert Rodriguez and Elizabeth Avellán, the studio evolved from independent roots into a creative hub for major streaming and film franchises.
Troublemaker Studios was established in 1991 under the name Los Hooligans Productions. The name was a direct nod to a comic strip created by Robert Rodriguez during his three years as a student at the University of Texas at Austin. Rodriguez intended for the name to create immediate recognition among fans of his illustrations as he transitioned into filmmaking. By 2000, the company was reincorporated as Troublemaker Studios, and it soon achieved its first major breakthrough with the 2001 family film Spy Kids, which launched an enduring media franchise.
Located in Austin, Texas, the studio occupies the former site of the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport. This facility is shared with Austin Studios and serves as a comprehensive production environment, featuring sound stages, production offices, and the largest green screen in the state. The studio has maintained a long-standing partnership with distributor Dimension Films, collaborating on projects such as the Mexico Trilogy and the From Dusk till Dawn series. In 2021, the company expanded its reach by signing a significant deal with HBO and the HBO Max streaming service.
The studio has served as a launchpad for several other production ventures founded by Rodriguez. In 2005, he started Rodriguez International Pictures to focus on the horror genre, followed by the 2010 launch of Quick Draw Productions, which provided greater financing and development freedom. By 2012, an animation division was added to the Quick Draw umbrella. More recently, in 2020, Rodriguez launched Double R Productions to co-create content for other entities. These various production arms operate out of the same Austin base, maintaining a collaborative ecosystem that has produced everything from short films to major streaming releases like We Can Be Heroes and Hypnotic.
