How a small Texas studio became the engine behind global animation franchises
In short: Founded in Austin in 2001, Powerhouse Animation Studios evolved from producing niche motion comics and arcade games to defining the aesthetic of modern adult animation. By blending traditional 2D techniques with high-profile partnerships, the studio has become a powerhouse for both original intellectual properties and major video game adaptations.
The studio was established in April 2001, taking its name from a Raymond Scott composition frequently used in classic Warner Bros. cartoons. Early operations focused on diverse digital assets, including motion graphics and educational content for clients like TED-Ed. A pivotal moment occurred in 2002 when director Kevin Smith commissioned the firm to create a custom arcade game as a gift for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. This early work in interactive media eventually led to collaborations on major video game cutscenes, such as the Epic Mickey series in 2010 and 2012.
Powerhouse gained significant industry recognition for its ability to adapt established properties. Beyond animating hundreds of Dilbert shorts, the studio expanded into high-end television and streaming content. In 2017, they announced their first adult animated series for Netflix, Castlevania, which set a new standard for their output. This success paved the way for a first-look deal with Netflix in 2021 and a string of high-profile projects, including Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Blood of Zeus. Their portfolio now spans diverse genres, from Greek mythology to the Tomb Raider and King Kong franchises.
The studio maintains a dual structure, with the parent company Powerhouse Animation Studios, Inc. based in Austin and a subsidiary, Powerhouse Animation LLC, established in 2014. In 2015, the LLC became a signatory of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees, joining The Animation Guild. As of 2023, the studio continues to bridge the gap between independent creators and major platforms, such as their work on the upcoming film GodSlap, based on the comic by Charles White Jr. With a satellite office in Burbank opened in 2014, the firm remains a central player in the evolving landscape of 2D animation.
While the studio is known for its original series like Seis Manos, its versatility remains its defining trait. From animating commercials for brands like Coca-Cola and Old Spice to producing music videos for artists like Lizzo, the team balances commercial advertising with narrative-driven storytelling. This hybrid model allows them to sustain a consistent output of high-quality animation across various media, ensuring their influence persists in both the advertising world and the streaming era.
