The 1,500-mile highway that traded city access for coastal scenery
In short: While Interstate 5 serves the West Coast's largest cities, U.S. Route 101 carves a different path. It is a primary route that prioritizes the rugged Pacific coastline, traversing three states to link national parks, historic Spanish missions, and the tech hubs of Silicon Valley.
Established in 1926, U.S. Stretching across 1,500 miles (2,400 km) by the Pacific Ocean, Route 101 functions as a crucial north–south corridor. Unlike the inland Interstate 5, which handles long-haul freight to major metropolitan centers, the 101 is a scenic corridor. In California, it carries the legacy of El Camino Real, the historic route linking early Spanish missions and pueblos. While it once ended in San Diego, the southern tip was cut back to Los Angeles during 1964 because of I-5's growth.
The highway’s geography shifts dramatically as it moves north. In Southern California, it navigates some of the nation's most congested freeways, including the Hollywood Freeway and the Ventura Freeway. As it enters the San Francisco Bay Area, it transforms into the ten-lane Bayshore Freeway, passing through Silicon Valley's high-tech hubs before traversing San Francisco's city streets to reach the Golden Gate Bridge. North of the bridge, it becomes the Redwood Highway, threading through the wine country of Sonoma County and the old-growth forests of Humboldt County.
Crossing into Oregon, the route becomes the Oregon Coast Highway. Here, it often narrows to a two-lane road, winding through 77 state parks and coastal landmarks like the 12-mile Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. Passing through marshes, coastal dunes, and high cliffs, the road concludes at its northern end in Tumwater, near Olympia, Washington, where it meets I-5. Throughout its length, the highway serves as a primary link for three national parks: Pinnacles, Redwood, and Olympic.
