U.S. Route 31: The Historic North-South Corridor That Interstate 65 Eventually Replaced
In short: Spanning from the Gulf Coast of Alabama to the northern tip of Michigan, U.S. Route 31 was once a primary artery for American travel. Today, it serves as a local connector, having been largely supplanted by the faster Interstate 65, yet it remains a fascinating relic of mid-century infrastructure.
U.S. Route 31 stretches from its southern terminus in Spanish Fort, Alabama, to its northern end at an interchange with I-75 near Mackinaw City, Michigan. Historically, the route was a vital connection for travelers moving between the Gulf and the Great Lakes. In Alabama, it was so essential that segments were often named for the cities they led to, such as the Birmingham Highway or the Mobile Highway. The road also carries deep historical significance, following paths once used by stagecoach lines like the Talladega-Montgomery Stage Road and even serving as a corridor for Confederate forces during the American Civil War in 1863 and 1864.
The rise of the Interstate Highway System fundamentally altered the road's purpose. Interstate 65 now parallels much of the route, effectively replacing it as the preferred path for through traffic. This shift is evident in the road's changing character; while it remains a multi-lane highway in many urban areas, it frequently narrows to two lanes in rural stretches. In some locations, the interstate was even constructed directly over the original path of US 31. Today, the route is primarily a local connector, though it retains unique features like the split into US 31W and US 31E between Nashville and Louisville—a rare configuration for U.S. Highways.
The northern segment of the route showcases a different evolution. In Indiana, the road follows a historic Native American trail that once led to a French fur-trading outpost. As it enters Michigan, the highway transitions into a mix of freeways and divided roads along the shore of Lake Michigan. While the route once crossed the Straits of Mackinac via ferry to reach the Upper Peninsula, it now terminates south of the Mackinac Bridge. Recent infrastructure efforts, such as the freeway segment near Benton Harbor that opened in November 2022, continue to modernize parts of the corridor, ensuring that while its role as a primary national artery has faded, the road remains a vital piece of the regional landscape.
