In short: Established in 1995, Udham Singh Nagar has rapidly evolved into a vital region of northern India. Named after a revolutionary, this district serves as a major agricultural and educational hub. Beyond its administrative significance, it stands out for its diverse linguistic landscape and its position as a populous state pillar.

Carved out of the Nainital District on 29 September 1995 by the government led by Mayawati, Udham Singh Nagar is situated within the Terai region of Uttarakhand. It is organized into nine distinct administrative units known as Tehsils: Bajpur, Gadarpur, Jaspur, Kashipur, Khatima, Kichha, Nanakmatta, Rudrapur, and Sitarganj. The district headquarters are located in Rudrapur, which sits just five kilometers from the Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar.

The district is geographically bordered by the Nainital and Champawat districts to the north and northeast, while its eastern boundary touches Nepal. To the south and west, it shares borders with several districts in Uttar Pradesh, including Bareilly, Rampur, Moradabad, Pilibhit, and Bijnor. This strategic location places it within the Kumaon Division, and it is part of the Nainital–Udhamsingh Nagar Lok Sabha constituency, which encompasses both the parent and the new district.

Data from the 2011 census highlights the district's significant scale. With a total population of 1,648,902, it ranks as the third most populous district in Uttarakhand, trailing only Haridwar and Dehradun. This population size is comparable to the total number of residents found in the country of Guinea-Bissau or the American state of Idaho. The district is also notable for its linguistic variety, with Hindi being the primary language, followed by Punjabi, Bengali, Urdu, Kumaoni, Bhojpuri, and Tharu dialects like Buksa and Rana.

Social indicators from 2011 show that the district contained 308,581 households. The effective literacy rate for those aged seven and older reached 73.1 percent, with a notable gender gap in educational attainment. Additionally, the demographic profile includes a Scheduled Caste population of 238,264 and a Scheduled Tribe population of 123,037, reflecting the region's complex social fabric and its ongoing development as a key economic and cultural center in northern India.
