In short: The UMPK is a field-attachable guidance kit that transforms unguided Soviet-era bombs into long-range, precision-guided glide munitions. By adding deployable wings and satellite navigation to existing stockpiles, Russia has created a cost-effective alternative to expensive guided missiles, fundamentally changing the tactical landscape of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The UMPK, or Unified Gliding and Correction Module, represents a shift toward mass-produced, low-cost precision weaponry. Unlike the American JDAM-ER, which requires factory-level integration, the UMPK is designed to be fitted to unguided bombs like the FAB-500 in field conditions. The system functions as a self-contained assembly featuring spring-deployed wings and a tail-mounted control unit. Once released from an aircraft, the bomb uses inertial and satellite navigation—powered by a Kometa-M antenna—to guide itself toward a target, allowing Russian pilots to strike from tens of kilometers away without entering the range of enemy air defenses.

The origins of this technology trace back to a 2002 proposal by NPO Bazalt, which displayed a prototype at the Farnborough Airshow. Despite its potential, the project languished for years as Russian defense contractors favored more profitable, complex guided munitions. The necessity of the Russo-Ukrainian war eventually revived the concept. By 2023, the kit was being widely deployed across various bomb types, including the FAB-250, FAB-1500, and even the massive FAB-3000. The reliance on civilian-grade electronics keeps costs to approximately 2 million Rubles per unit, though this choice also introduces reliability issues compared to Western equivalents.

The evolution of these munitions continues with the UMPB D-30SN, an intermediate weapon that integrates a jet engine and fuel tank for extended range, estimated at up to 90 kilometers. As the conflict progresses, the tactical environment has shifted; Ukrainian forces have begun employing advanced jamming and interception systems to counter these glide bombs. In response, both sides are now racing to refine their own versions of these kits, with Ukrainian contractors like KB Medoid reverse-engineering captured Russian hardware to develop their own indigenous glide bomb capabilities.
